Why did you decide to go into Orthopedics?

During medical school, I really enjoyed going to the hospital each day when I was on the orthopedic rotation.  I loved working towards the goal of getting patients back to being active.

Why did you choose your sub-specialty?

There are 3 main reasons.  First, I like doing surgeries that work.  Hip and knee replacements are two of the most successful surgeries in modern medicine with consistent track records of patient satisfaction.  Second, I found myself wanting to emulate the surgeons during my training that would tackle the complex problems of revision or redo joint replacement.  Lastly, it became clear to me that there would be a tremendous need for hip and knee replacement surgeons in my lifetime.  I wanted to help to meet this need in our society.

What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?

The most rewarding aspect is seeing my post-operative patients back in the office.  I feel a sense of accomplishment when I hear that patients no longer have pain or have been able to return to activities that they love.

What do you like to do when you are not in the office?

I love spending time with my wife and two children.  I try to squeeze in exercise and outdoor activities when possible, and I enjoy weightlifting, jogging, golf, and cross-country skiing.  Despite living in New York, Chicago, and Boston during my education and training, I am also an avid Detroit sports fan.
