Matt J.Bahu, MD

Dr. Bahu grew up in the Detroit area, his father was a life long auto worker, and his mother a housewife. With a modest background, his parents stressed the importance of higher education and instilled a tremendous work ethic in their sons. He followed in the footsteps of his 3 older brothers who are all physicians practicing locally in and around Detroit.

An Extensive Education Focusing on Bone and Joint Injuries:

As an undergraduate Dr. Bahu attended Wayne State University where he was a varsity athlete playing football, while maintaining exemplary academic standards throughout his college years. He sustained a serious sports injury during that time and had a major ligament in his knee reconstructed. It was after this experience that Dr. Bahu decided on a career in Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Bahu then attended Wayne State University School of Medicine. With the advantage of his early decision to become an orthopedic surgeon, he participated in numerous operative cases and research opportunities early in his educational career.

Dr. Bahu did his residency in Flint where he gained the vast bulk of his orthopedic experience. This training program provided him with the skills to become a technically sound surgeon and a compassionate physician. At the end of this five year training period, he was qualified to begin practicing as an orthopedic surgeon but chose to refine his skills. He decided to obtain further expertise in sports injuries and shoulder problems, the subspecialty that drew him to orthopedics in the first place. Living outside the Detroit area for the first time in his life, Dr. Bahu and his wife Sara, a pediatric nurse, moved to New York City to complete this extra training. Working as a fellow at one of the most respected shoulder fellowship training programs in the country gave him the opportunity to further refine his skills. He was able to collaborate in ground breaking research and perform surgery with world renowned surgeons at Columbia University/ New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.

A Commitment to Excellence
Dr. Bahu has now returned to his home in the Detroit area to serve the community in which he was raised. Dr. Bahu treats a large range of general orthopedic conditions and has fellowship training in shoulder, elbow, and sports surgery. He is committed to excellence in the diagnosis and management of these conditions. He is accepting direct patients as well as referrals from primary care physicians and other orthopedic surgeons. He is pleased to carry on the tradition of quality care started by Dr. Safa S. Kassab as a member of Orthopedic Specialists of Oakland County.
